Related terms

Wildland fire; forest fire; fire

Remarks

Consistent with international terminology and for consistency FAO uses the term “wildfire” to describe any uncontrolled forest fire, grass fire, peat fire or scrub fire and the term “fire” to include all intended or prescribed vegetation fires. A “fire” may of course transition to be a “wildfire” if it escapes or becomes uncontrolled.

Remarks

Wildland fire is a broader term than wildfire and refers to fires in wildland areas, which include forests, grasslands, and other natural landscapes. It makes a differentiation to structural fires, i.e., those occurring in buildings and urban areas.

Forestry Division (NFO), FAO, 2025.

Remarks

Forest fire is a more specific term than wildfire and refers to fires occurring in forested areas. It can be a wildfire, but it can also be a prescribed and/or controlled fire.
