Traditionally, the best-known N and S fertilizer. Formula: NH4(SO4)2. It contains about 21 percent N (all as ammonium) and 23–24 percent S (all as sulphate). Its specific gravity is 1.769, its bulk density is 720–1 040 kg/m3 and its angle of repose is 32–33 °. It is an acid-forming fertilizer because it lacks a metal cation. Highly soluble in water, it can be produced through various processes and used directly or as an ingredient of fertilizer mixtures. It is used as part of the basal dressing or as top-dressing to provide both N and S.
